Agency or tool:an honest comparison

Most brands weighing AI fashion imagery are choosing between hiring a studio and running a tool themselves. We sell both, so here is the version without the sales pitch.

Start here

The short answer.

Use a tool when you need a few images and nobody is depending on them. Hire a studio when the images have to match each other, land on a deadline and survive being printed large. The question is rarely which is better. It is which problem you have.

We are not a neutral party, so treat this page as informed rather than impartial. What makes it worth reading is that we sell the service and the do-it-yourself method, which means we have no reason to pretend the tools are worse than they are.

In their favour

What self-serve tools genuinely do well.

Speed on a single image

If you need one product on a model this afternoon, a tool will beat any studio. There is no brief, no queue and no conversation. For a quick listing photo or an internal mockup, that is the whole job done.

Cost at low volume

A monthly subscription spread across a handful of images is cheaper than commissioning work. If you are shooting occasionally and the stakes are low, the arithmetic favours doing it yourself.

Direct control and iteration

You can try twenty variations at midnight without asking anyone. Teams who enjoy the process and have someone with an eye for it often get genuinely good results this way.

No minimum commitment

You can stop whenever you like. For a brand testing whether AI imagery suits it at all, that is a reasonable place to start, and we would rather you found out cheaply.

Where a studio earns it

What you are paying a studio for.

Consistency across a whole set

Generating one strong image is a solved problem. Holding the same model, light and grade across forty looks is not, and it is the difference between a campaign and a folder of experiments. This is the work most of our clients arrive having struggled with.

Art direction before generation

Casting, styling and lighting are decided against your brand rather than discovered by trial. You review a direction instead of sifting a grid, and the revisions are our problem rather than your evening.

Accountability for the result

A tool gives you output. A studio gives you a deliverable it is responsible for, which matters when a product is described wrongly or a campaign misses a deadline. If a frame is not right, fixing it is included rather than another credit.

Difficult cases

Glass, polished metal, transparent packaging, fine jewellery and complex garment drape are where unsupervised generation quietly drifts. These need review passes and judgement, and they are the categories where the gap is widest.

Choosing

Which one fits your situation.

Use a tool if

  • You need a few images, occasionally, and nobody is depending on them
  • Someone on your team enjoys the craft and has time for it
  • You are testing whether AI imagery works for your brand at all
  • Your products are simple to render: flat garments, plain packaging, matte surfaces
  • Budget matters more than consistency right now

Hire a studio if

  • You are producing a campaign or a full catalogue, not a handful of images
  • Every frame has to look like it came from the same shoot
  • The imagery is going somewhere expensive: paid media, print, out-of-home
  • Your products are hard to render accurately, or accuracy drives returns
  • Nobody on your team has time to become a competent art director

If you recognised yourself in both columns, that is normal. Plenty of brands run a tool for everyday listings and commission a studio for the two or three moments a year that matter.

FAQ

Questions worth asking.

Yes, and they are improving quickly. For a single image on a simple product, several of them produce results that are hard to fault. The honest limitation is consistency: holding one look across a whole set is a different problem from producing one good frame, and that is where most brands run out of road.
